Bolyhos 2011


Our family has been engaged with distilling pálinka (Hungarian fruit brandy) since 1994. With several years’ experience, using old family recipes and unique technology, we created Bolyhos ‘fruit-bedded’ pálinka from 100 per cent ripe, savoury, dessert quality fruit with high sugar content. A specifically Hungarian product, our patented pálinka is aged on fruit-bed in metal casks or wood barrels for six months, resulting in pure aroma and excellent flavour. After the pálinka is matured, in the process of bottling, we put some dried fruit of the same variety as the pálinka into the bottles and fill them up. Then it is aged for another five or six months. In the course of aging the dried fruit regains its original shape and gives the pálinka a nice colour. This ‘fruit-bed’ makes the pálinka even more attractive and rich in content.

We built a new distillery, bottling and fruit-drying plant meeting European Union requirements in Újszilvás in 2003, where apart from providing distilling services to the paying public, we also set out upon distilling for commercial purposes.

We first took part in an international pálinka festival with our pálinkas in the town of Gyula in 2001, where we received the highest recognition already on the first occasion. Our bedded plum pálinka, apart from the Grand Prize, also won the special award of the Federation of Hungarian Food Industries (Éfosz) and a gold medal. Since then we have added many gold, silver and bronze medals to the list.

We were given the greatest recognition at the 5th International Pálinka Festival at Gyula held on 16 to 18 April 2004, where Bolyhos Bedded Plum Pálinka won the Grand Prize, the title of ‘Hungary’s Best Pálinka in 2004’, awarded by the Minister of Finance.

In 2006, our Bedded Cserszegi Fűszeres Grape Pálinka won a Grand Gold Medal as well as it was chosen as Flagship Product of 2006 by the Order of Hungarian Pálinka Knights.

In November 2006, five of our pálinkas were awarded the certificate of Top Quality Hungarian Food.

In 2007, in addition to 5 gold medals, 8 silver medals and 10 bronze medals, Bolyhos Bedded Wild Sour Cherry Pálinka won the Grand Prize of the competition and was awarded the title of Hungary’s Best Pálinka of 2007.
Some further products of ours received the certificate of Top Quality Hungarian Food in the years 2007 and 2008.

Bolyhos Distillery gained even more achievements in 2008. Besides our numerous gold, silver and bronze medals, we won three champion prizes and became The Most Successful Distillery of Hungary.

In 2008 we entered for HunDeszt Pálinka Competition for the first time where we won 5 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals.

17 of our pálinkas were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals at the Gyula Pálinka Competition in 2009.

Further two of our pálinkas were awarded the title of Top Quality Hungarian Food in 2010. During 2010 we won 46 medals altogether in various competitions.

Our family’s ambition is to familiarize more and more people with pálinka and restore its position as a popular national drink enjoyed regularly but with moderation. To this end, we have started to organise pálinka tastings where visitors to Újszilvás have a chance to take a tour of the distillery, get to know the process of pálinka making as well as tasting and buying ‘bedded’ pálinka.
